What better way to celebrate the most American of holidays than with a good old fashion BBQ competition.The celebration begins July 2^nd as competition BBQ teams from across the Western United States converge at the Weber Point Event Center to compete for cash prizes, bragging rights, and a State Championship BBQ title. Once these competitors fire up their pits, downtown Stockton will be filled with the overwhelming aroma of smoke and spice awaiting your tasting and judgment the following day at the Second Annual Taste of San Joaquin.

On July 3^rd, the premier celebration of food and entrancement comes together as locally-owned and operated restaurants, wineries, and BBQ’rs, offer ‘tastes’ for as little as $1.00!!! Add live entertainment, sunshine and activities for the whole family and you have just experienced the most celebrated of American holidays in the best possible way.

Sounds like this is going to be a great event.  If you are in the Stockton area, be sure to mark your calendars for July 3rd.

In Rowlett, Texas the Rowlett Exchange Club is sponsoring “QueFest” on July 2nd to the 4th at the Elgin B. Robertson Park (I-30 and Dalrock Rd).  Musical entertainment includes Jonny Lang, Joan Jett, Tracey Lawrence and Charlie Robinson.

Up in Lansing, Michigan we have “Barbeque on the Boulevard” on July 10th.

The “Famous Dave’s 6th Annual BBQ & Blues Festival” takes place on June 12th in Minneapolis, MN.

Way up in the far northeast the “Mainely Grillin’ & Chillin’ State BBQ Championship” is taking place at Eliot, Maine on August 7th and 8th

BBQ & the Blues!
• John Hardy’s Bar-B-Q in Rochester, MN has been referred to us saying “we are missing an icon”.

Barbecue Competition Teams

• From Houston TX we hear about the RAM Cookers Cook Off Team with Louis “Big Lou” Melchor and Basil “Uncle B” Rojas.  Michelle says they have a website coming soon and we will update their listing with that link as soon as we get it.

Barbecue Festivals & Competitions

• There is a new barbecue festival in Franklin, NC this year. The 1st Annual Mountain High BBQ & Music Festival will be held on August 8-9, 2009.  $11,400 total purse and a KCBS sanctioned event.
• Martinez, CA (SF Bay Area) is the scene for the 3rd Annual King of the C0unty BBQ and Music Festival. This even will be held on June 20-21, 2009 at the Martinez Marina Waterfront Park.
• The Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival in Charlotte NC now has a website and the event will be held on Sept 11-12, 2009

Orange County BBQ Cookoff and Family Festival to be held in Costa Mesa, CA at the Orange County fairgrounds on May 9, 2009.  Some of you may recognize this event as Que’n For Kids.

Also from California comes the First Annual Penn Valley BBQ Cook-Off and Cowboy Mounted Shooting Competition, and IBCA sanctioned state championship to be held in Penn Valley, CA on June 5-7, 2009.

We have been told there is a pretty good bbq restaurant up in Roseville, MI called Lazybones Smokehouse. They have a full menu of great looking barbecue as well as an all you can carry out lunch buffet. In addition to the restaurant they offer catering services and it looks like they are getting ready to add an online ordering service to their site. If any of our readers stops in at Lazybones Smokehouse be sure to send us a review and some photos.

We have also been notified about a BBQ Festival in Historic Downtown Yankton, South Dakota called the Rockin’ Ribfest.  This event will be held on September 19, 2009

I realize this is a barbecue oriented website but I have to tell you that I enjoy a great steak, especially one that is cooked to perfection over an open flame. Now there is no excuse for you not to learn how to master the art of grilling the perfect steak. There is also now a place for all of you “steak masters” to step up to the challenge. Magnolia, Arkansas is the host site for the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STEAK COOKOFF, an event that has been featured many times on the Food Network.  In celebration of their 20th anniversary, they are sponsoring a BBQ Grill School, the details of which can be found under the “events” link.  In addition to great steak, Aaron Tippon will be in concert. This event is going to be on May 15 and 16, 2009.
