Back in April I received an email from Nick and Jamie Riley of Riley’s Grillin Sauce out of Glasgow, KY asking to list their sauce on www.bbq-festivals.com under our bbq sauces section. I am always looking for new sauces to add to our listings to help barbecue fans find more and more sauces. During the course of our conversation they offered to send me a bottle to try.
Anyone that is from Kentucky knows that most of the months of April and May we appeared to be in a monsoon season. It seemed like it rained every day for two months. Finally the rains ended and things dried up and I was able to fire up the grill and try some Riley’s Grillin’ Sauce.
I got a nice sized bottle (18 oz) which can be purchased from their website. The bottle was well packed and arrived in great shape. The label kind of says it all; good for beef, chicken and pork. I gave the bottle a good shake and opened it and took a whiff. This sauce has a pleasant smell and appeared to be nice and thick. I took a taste on my finger and really liked it. It didn’t seem to taste like it smelled and there was a slight residual tang that stayed around for a few minutes on the back of my tongue. I liked it so far.
I decided to try it on some chicken and took a couple of boneless chicken breasts and put them into a plastic bag with a generous portion of bbq sauce and let it marinade overnight. It didn’t take long to cook the chicken and as it cooked some of the bbq sauce started to carmelize, especially on the ends where the chicken was thinner and cooked faster. After about 20 minutes the chicken was done and the sauce had formed a nice glaze. About 5 minutes before removing the chicken I brushed a little more sauce on to give it a little moistness on the outside.
I took my first bit and I was definitely impressed. This is a good bbq sauce that doesn’t overwhelm with any one ingredient. The label says it has tomato, vinegar, brown sugar, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, molasses and other ingredients…….. none of these flavors overpowered any of the others. As I said before when tasting on my finger, there was a little residual zing on the tongue after a while. It wasn’t a burn nor was it distracting from the flavor. It just reminded of what you just had. It is both sweet and tart at the same time if that is possible and has a very pleasant after taste. I even took a couple slices of the chicken and dipped it in small bowl of the sauce. It makes a great dipping sauce as well. I can hardley wait to try Riley’s Grillin Sauce with some pulled pork which is coming very soon.
In the end I would give this sauce a great rating and highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a good tasting sauce that doesn’t overpower and leaves a pleasant aftertaste with a slight zing.
They also sent a bottle of sauce they are working on that they say has a little more kick to it with some extra heat added. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet but will definitely do so soon.
